Open Cluster M47 and NGC 2423
M46 and M47 are two close open star clusters near the big dog, Canis Major. They are well positioned for viewing in the winter, following Orion in the sky. On this page you can compare my 2010 CCD camera images with some much older DSLR pictures.
M47 is the open cluster on the right, while the other NGC object is on the lower left quarter frame. There are a ton of stars in this area of the sky as you can see. Details: 5x5 min = 25 min exposure. Takahashi TOA 130 Telescope (a 5" APO refractor telescope) with the reducer, AP 900GTO mount, QHY8 CCD Camera. Other pictures from the camera are are here. NGC2438 is a nice little planetary nebula listed as magnitude 6.7 in The Sky6. M46 is composed of 4x5 = 20 minutes total exposure. Takahashi TOA 130 Telescope (a 5" APO refractor telescope) with the flattener, AP 900GTO mount, QHY8 CCD Camera. Other pictures from the camera are are here. Above, 160seconds, ISO 800, TOA with reducer at ~f5.8, significant crop from frame. Had some guiding issues on this one, but I thought the planetary was cool. 12/12/2004 at NHAC Neal site.
