The Andromeda Galaxy: 2016 HD-sized Version

The Andromeda Galaxy, Charles Messier's 31st catalogued object (M31) is about 2,900,000 (2.9 million) light years away.  It is the nearest major galaxy to our own "Milky Way" and contains 1 trillion stars. (Wow!)  Below M31 is another, much smaller galaxy, M110.  M32 is another galaxy shown in this shot; it is the bright patch just above left.  See this Wikipedia link for more info on M31.  The image above is presented at 1920x1080 pixels.

Capture Details:  See my dedicated M31 page here.

Star Trails Over Cactus...  Wimberley, TX (Fall 2007)

Orion over "Starry Nights"

Orion was framed in this shot as I started the star trails.  Betelgeuse is the reddish star near the top that stars about 1/3 of the way over.  The three "belt stars" start below that, and then Rigel.  Sirius the dog star, and brightest star in the sky, starts near the mid-left edge of the frame.

This shot is a bit overexposed at f8 using my Olympus 2n camera and Olympus 21mm lens.  It was exposed for close to 8 hours.  Fuji SHQ 200 film.
